Your Bio

The San Mateo County Horsemen's Association is formed for the purpose of sponsoring, cultivating and fostering an interest in fine horses and fine horsemanship in all types of horses throughout the State of California and in the County of San Mateo in particular; to give aid and support to every type of activity concerning horses; to sponsor any activity which will further the general purpose thereof, such as, but not limited to, horse shows and parades; to assist and encourage the acquisition, building, maintenance and supervision of bridle paths, horseback trails and the rights-of-way thereof, as well as accommodations for the riders and horses thereon; and to do any and all things in furtherance of horsemen and horses.

Family Play Day & Halloween Costume Extravaganza 2009 : We knew the SMCHA Halloween Playday would be great when the fog lifted minutes before the Star Spangled Banner. Thirty-three riders showed up at the Mounted Patrol Grounds on Halloween Day to compete in twelve different horseback events. We rode barrels, poles, relay races, an obstacle course and were even dragged on a sled by a mounted rider. The day included a spectacular lunch and good, friendly competion. When the dust settled, we collected our prizes, settled our horses and headed for an evening of trick-or-treat, tired but satisfied with new friends and new found riding skills. Past Presidents Ride 2009 : We had so many riders come out to honor our Past Presidents that we split up into two large trail groups and took separate routes from the Mounted Patrol Grounds through the Woodside gated trails to meet at the "Shack". General Meeting Sept. 2009 - How to Fit a Saddle Clinic : The general meeting September 2009 was a class in "How to Fit a Saddle". Chris Shaw from Shaws Saddlery talked to us about the four major steps to saddle fit. Jim Gilbraith, custom saddle maker and owner of Backroad Saddlery, showed us the many choices of saddle fittings and styles and the steps that go into the construction of a custom made saddle. We had an ice cream social afterwards.

Rich Braun Sorting Clinic June 2009 : SMCHA sponsored a Sorting Clinic at the Mounted Patrol Grounds in Woodside 6/20/09. The clinic instructor was Rich Braun with the able assistance of Joan McLaren. Some of the horses had never been close to cattle before, so the morning session was an eye-opener. After lunch break, these same horses were working the cattle at a much quicker pace. Everyone involved seemed to be having a great time and the arena resounded with cheers for a job well done. Group Ride, Purisima Creek Redwoods May 2009 : May 24 we met at Al and Sarah's Ranch to split into groups to ride into Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. It was a cold and foggy day, but the trails were wonderful and the Redwoods stunningly beautiful. Nancy, Sharon and Clint had prepared a delicious Tri-Tip BBQ lunch to warm us when we returned. Spring Ride 2009 : The Spring Ride was in the Skyline Ridge and Russian Ridge Preserves of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space Preserve. SMCHA VP and Ride Chairwoman, Nancy Kouchekey, explored the area in three pre-rides, so we would have a perfect day. I included pics from 2 of the pre-rides, since Nancy did not ride the day of the Spring Ride....she stayed behind to organize things and have lunch ready for the riders after the ride. 16 riders braved a chilly, windy day to enjoy a lovely ride with beautiful vistas. Jack Brook Work Day 2009 : About 50 volunteers from several local Horse clubs spent their day getting Jack Brook Horse Camp ready for this season. Projects included weedwhacking, fireplace repair, painting the restroom, general campground cleaning, pouring cement in the fence posts of the corrals by the washstand and splitting a mountain of wood and stacking the pieces of firewood. We were served a great tri-tip BBQ. Everyone was tired and sore, but the camp looked great! Photos by Sue Winslow, Carol Antonio and Danielle Bushue.

PBR Night at the Cow Palace : SMCHA hired a bus to take 50 bull riding fans to the Cow palace for a PBR Challenge Tour event. We had refreshments at the meeting place and on the bus and Barbara had gotten us great seats. Clarkia Trail Work Day March 2009 : A hearty group of volunteers spent 4 hours hauling wet gravel up the trail to the section with coarse rock that SMCHA installed last Fall. This gravel was raked and tamped-in to make the trail smoother and better finished. The park rangers had sawed up a fallen tree, so we also hauled the heavy logs back down to the road for removal. Ginger and Cheryl recruited, registered and kept us hydrated and energized with refreshments (sorry I failed to get their pictures). Photos by Sue Winslow
